Automotive sales recruitment is a fluid market with staff tending to move on every few years. Those with sales flair are, therefore, often promoted quickly it's possible to become general manager of a dealership within three years.

An area of rapid growth is the fleet market. This is a long-term role where its important to develop relationships with company clients. It does, however, generate less profit per unit.

Other options are to work for a manufacturer handling sales or after-sales in a field- or HQ-based role.

How much you earn is down to how good you are. In a dealership, basic pay can be as low as 15,000, but commission or bonuses can boost this to 40,000. It is possible to earn 60,000-70,000.

Cars only come with the job if you are a sales executive or manager.
