A big salary may be enticing, but beware, though, that geography will have a bearing on your earnings. Those selling banking software to City of London clients are looking at bigger bonuses than say in a smaller city such as Leeds, although the basic salary would be comparable.

Salaries are anything between �18k-�100k basic. The average is �24k-�32k, up from �16k-24k seven years ago.

In fact, once you�re in, it�s so lucrative that it�s hard to get out again, particularly in software sales.

It�s also hard to get into. In the late 1990s lots of good technical sales people moved over from the Engineering sector so there is plenty of talent in this field.
