A big salary may be enticing, but beware, though, that geography will have a bearing on your earnings. Those selling banking software to City of London clients are looking at bigger bonuses than say in a smaller city such as Leeds, although the basic salary would be comparable.

Salaries are anything between 18k-100k basic. The average is 24k-32k, up from 16k-24k seven years ago.

In fact, once youre in, its so lucrative that its hard to get out again, particularly in software sales.

Its also hard to get into. In the late 1990s lots of good technical sales people moved over from the Engineering sector so there is plenty of talent in this field.
