Experiment with success in the Science sector
Most of the top employers in this sector are involved with cutting-edge research so it's no surprise that they expect their sales teams to be equally questing.
To keep abreast of the huge leaps in research and development across all fields of science - be it life, biotech, clinical, physical, analytical, computational or engineering you'll need a relevant degree under your belt. Employers also look for hands-on experience in a laboratory or research environment.
If you've got a PhD, so much the better. Increasingly, employers are recruiting candidates who can bring technical knowledge to a sales team particularly in roles such as product specialist.
Besides being a sector that attracts sharp, quick-witted sales professionals who thrive on an exciting work environment, you also need to be tenacious, as deals can involve protracted negotiations between different organisations.
But relax, not all science sector sales opportunities are this high-powered or technical. There are plenty of roles for keen graduates to sell everyday essentials from pipettes to balances, calibrators, testers, pumps, filters, chemicals and so on. These opportunities will suit you if you are ambitious and like to close sales more quickly before moving on to your next customer.
Basic salaries for account managers and sales representatives hover between £20,000-£40,000, depending on experience and qualifications. Bonuses and commission, however, can add a boost of 10-25% - in some cases 50%.
